Your First Golf Day: Self-Practice, a 60-Minute Lesson or 18 Holes?

Choose the smallest format that answers your next question. One hour can test interest; a lesson can correct setup; an 18-hole round needs a larger budget, more time and venue confirmation.

If no one in the group can explain grip, stance and the hitting line, choose the 60-minute lesson. If you already know the basics and only want a low-commitment trial, choose one hour of simulator practice. Treat 18 holes as a later step—not the default first swing. The three northern-Taiwan examples below use current operator pages to make the trade-offs concrete. They are choices to verify, not live availability or bookings.

Compare the three commitments

Format Best for Known price Main trade-off
60-minute simulator practice A player who already understands safe setup and wants to test interest or repeat a simple drill. Friends Golf posts NT$400 before noon, NT$500 from 12:00–18:00 and NT$600 after 18:00 on weekdays; NT$700 on weekends/holidays. VIP is NT$1,500/hour. Lowest time commitment, but unsupervised repetition can reinforce a poor setup. Club rental, booking, cancellation and whether the rate is per bay or per person still need confirmation.
60-minute coached lesson A true beginner, a mixed-experience pair, or anyone who wants an instructor to set the first practice task. CP Golf posts NT$3,000 for one hour, private one-to-one or a group of up to five, at a chosen driving range north of Taoyuan. More guidance in one visit, but confirm the coach, venue, group split, range-ball or bay fees, rental clubs, language and cancellation before paying.
18-hole course A player who has practised basic contact, can follow pace and venue rules, and has an experienced companion or professional guidance. Linkou Golf lists an individual general guest at NT$4,800 weekday / NT$5,700 holiday, including green, cart, insurance, maintenance, locker and caddie fees. Full-course context, but the largest commitment. Holiday general guests need a shareholder companion; small groups have surcharges, and rental clubs are not priced on the cited page.

These prices are not interchangeable quotes. The simulator price is a posted hourly venue rate, the lesson price is instruction, and the Linkou price is an 18-hole package. Transport, food, club hire and anything the operator does not explicitly include remain separate.

Option 1: use one hour to test interest

A simulator hour works when one person already knows how to set up safely and can keep the plan narrow: warm up, make a small number of controlled swings, review one result, then stop. Friends Golf’s published hourly table gives a useful price boundary from NT$400 to NT$700 for the regular bay by time and day. Its page also describes free parking at the flagship location.

Before treating that as a total, ask whether the charge is per bay or per person, whether clubs and balls are included, how many people may share the hour, whether first-time orientation is provided, and what happens if you arrive late or cancel. The cited page does not settle those fields. A simulator is also not a promise that someone is qualified to judge your body, injury history or swing safety.

Useful boundary: self-practice is for repeating something you already understand. If the group cannot agree on safe spacing, grip or setup, change the plan to instruction.

Option 2: pay for the first correction, not ten guesses

CP Golf’s single-session page lists a one-hour class at NT$3,000, available as private one-to-one instruction or for a group of up to five. The content is agreed with the student, and the location is a selected driving range north of Taoyuan; registration is online. For a beginner, the practical outcome should be modest: a safe hitting routine, one repeatable setup and a next practice task—not a promise of course readiness after one hour.

The operator page does not say whether the NT$3,000 includes range balls, bay fees, club rental or transport between venues. It also does not publish a cancellation rule on that page. Ask for one written total and list every participant before payment. A five-person maximum does not mean the same individual practice time as a private lesson.

Option 3: reserve a half or full day for the course

Linkou Golf’s price page, effective 1 February 2026, lists NT$4,800 on weekdays and NT$5,700 on holidays for an individual general guest. The listed 18-hole price includes green, cart, insurance, course-maintenance, locker and caddie fees. Two players sharing one caddie add NT$200 per person for the caddie and NT$150 per person for the cart; a solo player adds NT$700 and NT$900 respectively. The club says weekdays are open to general guests, while holiday general guests need a shareholder to accompany them.

The venue asks players to reserve early and to notify the counter by the previous day if plans change. The page provides a reservation phone number and says summer phone reservations run 06:00–17:00, while also warning that on-site charges may change. For planning, allow roughly five to seven hours door to door for an 18-hole day; that is an editorial allowance, not the operator’s stated duration.

Do not stop at the headline fee. Confirm the exact date classification, tee time, group size, all small-group surcharges, club and shoe rental, dress requirements, transport, food, gratuity practice, weather decision and cancellation consequences. A course, caddie or booking form does not certify that a new player is ready.

Wordless flow from one-hour self-practice to a coached lesson and then an eighteen-hole round, with time and cost increasing
Move right only when the previous format has answered your next question and the larger time and cost still fit.

Prepare the same essentials for any format

  • People: record who is completely new, who can explain safety and whether anyone needs instruction or language support.
  • Time: add arrival, check-in, warm-up and a firm finish. For the course, protect the whole return journey rather than scheduling another fixed event immediately after.
  • Equipment: confirm handedness, club availability, shoes, glove and ball or bay fees. Do not buy a full set merely to test one session.
  • Body and weather: stop for pain, dizziness, lightning or a venue closure. Use the Central Weather Administration forecast as a live departure check; it is not preserved in this article.
  • Exit plan: know whom to call, how to cancel and what cost remains if a lesson, bay or tee time cannot proceed.

Turn the choice into a plan

Use the general plan form to record companions, region, format, start and finish, the quoted total, equipment questions and the weather or cancellation switch. It does not reserve a bay, coach or tee time, and this article does not provide a verified golf-specific prefill parameter. Continue at the English Guides hub for more planning methods.
